OSS Sound
This page covers the installation and configuration of the OSS sound driver included with the 2.4.x kernel distribution. I have tested these drivers with 2.4.5-ac14 and later with no problems. If you are using an earlier Kernel you need to use the ALSA driver. Now if you are not happy with configuring your Kernel even with the help in this HOWTO, my .config file and pre-compiled optimized Kernel available for download, which will allow you to get things up and running without much pain and suffering, get them from the Kernel Page
C1MW Owners: Its been reported that this sound configuration will not work for you, but all is not lost, as Calvin Kin from Staten Island NY, sent the fix.
TIP: If you are using my optimized Kernel you can ignore this whole page as you already have all that you need.
Kernel Configuration
Just in case you want to do it alone and not use my .config file or pre-compiled Kernel, here are the settings needed in the sound section under xconfig or menuconfig.

- Nothing else must be enabled in the sound section.
- I have not tested this as a module, only tests are static in the Kernel.
- Unlike the ALSA drivers, the volume levels are not muted by default.
- Nick Brown, reported that this Legacy port support is not needed for the sound to work well. I tested this on both my C1Vx systems, and yes the sound works. Now the issue, I have found that with this disabled on some C1Vx (yes really) some apps cause a high pitched buzz and intermittent clicks when you exit them (release /etc/dsp). Until this one is solved I recommend that you try it on your system and see if you are affected. Almost forgot the apps I used where xmms and xine.
Final thoughts on sound
Now the warning, the quality of the internal speakers on the Picturebook is terrible, so I thought I must warn you not to expect much, they are nowhere near good enough for playing MP3, on the other hand use headphones or external speakers and all is right with the world.
C1MW Update (Submitted by Calvin Kim)
This machine does not have the same Yamaha sound chip as the older C1Vx series. For this machine under 2.4.19 Kernel, you need to use "Trident 4DWave DX/NX, Sis 7018 or ALI 5451 PCI Audio Core".
