Firewire

Before I got this machine, all the research I did, showed that the IEEE1394 (yes its Firewire by one of its non-apple names) controller in this machine would have no hope of working under Linux. Now for the surprise its actually a OHCI compliant controller, and is reported fully functional with the driver in the 2.4.2 and later Kernels. Anyone with any experience actually using this please email me and I will add your good or bad experiences here.

Anyway I so not have any Firewire devices to test this with as yet, so all I can do is give you the Kernel settings and point you in the direction of the software you need. If time allows, I will test Ethernet over Firewire and see what happens, if that actually works I will write a HOWTO and link it from here.

Kernel Configuration

To enable support for this port you need the following kernel settings.

Code maturity level options
Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/driver Yes

NOTE: This is very important as the support of IEEE1394 is not complete, without enabling this option the rest of the Kernel setting are grayed out.

Under IEEE 1394 (Firewire) support. Enable the following
IEEE 1394 (Firewire) support (EXPERIMENTAL) Yes
OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) support Yes
Video1394 support Yes
Raw IEEE1394 I/O support Yes
Excessive debugging output Yes

The last option regarding debugging information is not really needed and once you have working devices, it can be disabled without problems, until then I recommend that you enable this, so that you can see whats happening on the line.

Testing

This is as far as I have been able to go with this, as I mentioned not having anything to plug into it. On bootup the driver appears to start correctly, it finds the controller etc with no reported errors. For more information and links to some of the applications, have a look at Linux1394.sourceforge.net. As soon as I get anything to test this with I will post the updates here. Now if you have it working, drop me a mail and I will include your information here, crediting you.
