Killer OSX Native Apps (Networking)

Fugu

Developer: Home Page License: BSD Rating:

Fugu is a graphical frontend to the command line Secure File Transfer application (SFTP). SFTP is similar to FTP, but unlike FTP, the entire session is encrypted, meaning no passwords are sent in clear text form, and is thus much less vulnerable to third-party interception. Fugu allows you to take advantage of SFTP's security without having to sacrifice the ease of use found in a GUI. Fugu also includes support for SCP file transfers, and the ability to create secure tunnels vi SSH. [more]

One thing to note, is that this application is not intended for users who do not have a good understanding of wireless networking. I have run extensive tests with Kismac and found no problems of any kind. If you are in the networking business, you need this. [more]

Little Snitch runs in the background and hooks into the operating system kernel while you are logged in. When an application tries to establish a network connection, Little Snitch intercepts the attempt and brings up an alert panel, telling you all the connection details including the name of the application which initiated the connection. You can either allow the connection, deny it or add a permanent rule for similar future-connections.

This most useful apps major use is to deal with the growing trend for applications to call home. At least with this installed you have the choice whether to allow any app to call home or not. [more]
